80smetalman’s Choices for National Anthems
National Anthems inspire love for one’s country. Every one I’ve heard definitely does that. Some are hard driving like the US, UK or Canada while others are more somber like Japan or Wales. Even Italy’s which reminded me of a parade or Spain’s which sounds like a sixteenth century dance still can inspire love for the country. However, most national anthems are over a century old and while there’s nothing wrong with that, since they still inspire nationalistic feelings, I wonder if more modern ones could be used. See, I have come to associate certain songs by certain bands with the country they come from and that has me thinking. Maybe these songs should be national anthems for their country.
USA: Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd (I’m talking the full fifteen minute live version)
UK: Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
Canada: Tom Sawyer by Rush
Germany: Proud of My Country by Bonfire
Norway- Seven Seas by TNT
Sweden- As Above, So Below by Yngwie Malmsteen
Finland- Tragedy by Hanoi Rocks
The Netherlands: Radar Love by Golden Earring
Ireland- Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2
Japan- Crazy Nights by Loudness
Australia- Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Note: For Brazil, it would definitely be something by Seputura and France would be a suitable song by Gojira.
While this is meant to be a little bit of fun, I’m sure some of you are cracking your knuckles and limbering your typing fingers to contribute some of your own suggestions. Well, I’m waiting.
Next post: The Scorpions- Blackout

Do you know who else is a Canadian icon with his song Go for a soda? Kim Mitchell could be on your list for my country’s anthem. Especially back East they love him out there. My husband even has some friendship history with him. 😊

Yes, I remember Kim Mitchell and “Go For Soda,” good song. It’s cool that your husband has a friendship history with him, you can say that you know a rock star. However, I will always first associate Canada with Rush and Tom Sawyer.

It’s a great song and yes most of Canada does associate Rush and Trooper with Canadian iconic bands. They’ve been around before I was born and I grew up with their timeless music. My husband and Kim went for a few “sodas” one summer. 😉

Amen Mike, I just heard of it being introduced to a new generation and I enjoyed hearing their appreciation for Kim’s music. 😃

I think I heard it in a Family Guy episode recently. I was surprised to hear that, but happy of course. Kim just released a new track a couple days ago FYI!

I heard that episode too and I called my husband into the room. I said listen it’s someone else getting air play than Beiber. 😉 Thanks for the tip I heard Kim had something in the making. I will go and check it out! 😊

No worries! Kim posted it to his Facebook about two days ago, complete with music video. I guess since he left Q, he’s back to making music?

Hopefully your husband can relive the memory again because I will definitely visit Kim’s album when I eventually get to 1985.

I’m fairly certain Scotland’s national anthem is I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). I might be wrong …

Possibly, it is the song Scotland is most noted for. Although for me personally, I would choose “Run Run Away” by Slade.

Or possibly something by Nazereth. My thoughts are going for “Whiskey Drinking Woman.”

Thanks and since two Canadians have supported this, then I must decree that Tom Sawyer is the official national anthem for Canada!
