We Need to Talk About ALL Deaths by Suicide—Not Just When Celebrities Die by Suicide
I am saddened by the two celebrities, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, that died by suicide last week. However, I am glad it has increased the discussion about mental illness and suicide. I wish people would discuss the severe epidemic of mental illness and suicide before celebrity suicides occurred, but at any rate we are talking about it finally.
After listening to people speak about mental illness on the news and other places, I have come to the realization that most people do not have a clue what mental illness is. Too many people have said that these two people who died by suicide had everything going for them and had everything to live for and yet they were not happy. These comments make me think that people really don’t get it.

A friend of mine lost her son. I was shocked. Absolutely shocked. I only met him once but he was an incredible guy. He made me laugh NON stop. I wanted to work on a project with him. I thought we could co-host videos together and he could be the funny one.

That is the truth. Robin Williams — one of the funniest humans ever to live.
I wanted his mom to know how special her son was. His humour and creativity was so out there.

My lovely wife is a mental health therapist, an intensive case manager in her hospital’s department (with 15 years’ experience in both community and correctional settings). This sentence sums up a lot of our experience of listening to other people talk (or try to) with her about what she does. It’s never easy, and you nailed it here too, “Mental illness is not a choice. Ah gotcha! Still, it’s the right thinking. My lovely wife is sooo good at what she does (yes, I am biased completely, but her co-workers confirm it constantly), it’s a tough field.
